What Type of Forklift Do You Need?
The first step in making any purchasing decision is to
determine what type of forklift you need.
Consider the following questions:
- What type of load-handling device do you use? Pallets? Crates? Skids? How big are they?
- How far will the forklift truck be transporting loads?
- How much weight will the forklift be lifting? (capacity)
- How many hours will it be operating per day? How many shifts do you run?
- How high will you need to lift?
- Will it be operating indoors, outdoors or both?
- What is your warehouse design or infrastructure?
- How wide are your aisles?
- What kind of applications will the forklift truck be performing? Will it be unloading over-the-road trucks? Order Picking? Stacking and retrieving?
- Does your operator need to be able to sit down or stand up?
F.Y.I
Fuel
Electric:
- Typically used in Food Industry because of OSHA (no fumes)
- No Noise non-polluting
- Limited aisle spacing
- Indoors usually….will short out if caught in the rain outside
- Usually cheaper to maintain, don't require fuel, oil changes and replacement parts like plugs and points.
- Need to pay attention to battery, check water levels frequently. Letting the battery go dry is very expensive because of replacement costs.
LP :
- more noisy than electric
- generates some fumes
- is approved to use indoors by OSHA, also can be used outdoors
- need at least 12' to right angle stack for 4-wheel sit-downs
Diesel:
- designed to be used in more rugged terrain.
- Engine doesn't need to be turned off. You kill it if you crank the engine every two minutes.
- Need to change the oil regularly
Gas:
- outdoors only
- works well in cold climate
Tires
Cushion (rubber):
- Indoor
- Concrete and some times asphalt…but on hot days the lift can sink.
Pneumatic (air):
- Outdoor
- Asphalt, hard packed dirt and gravel.
Tractor-type tires:
- Outdoor
- Sand, loose gravel and construction sites.
Lift
Capacity:
- Need to know what you are lifting.
- The weight needs to be established…always add a little extra on to the capacity for safety.
- Maximum capacity will accure at the 24" load center.
- When forks are raised, or when forks move away from the mast the capacity goes down.
Mast:
- height of the load is measured at the forks.
Warehouse Design
Aisle:
- Three-wheeled sit-down counterbalanced requires 10' aisles
- Four-wheeled sit-down counterbalance requires 12-13' aisles
- Reach truck outriggers requires 8' aisles.
- Double reach truck requires 8'9" aisles.
- Turret trucks requires at least 4'6" aisles. They can rotate loads 180 degrees. If slip sheet attachments are used they need to be 8" – 9" wider.
Intended application:
- lift truck used to load and unload trailers a front-wheel drive, sit-down rider counterbalanced model is preferred.
